My New Favourite Trick – Sitting Pretty

My New Favourite Trick – Sitting Pretty

I have been working with both my dogs on teaching them to balance on their 2 hind legs and bum. I call it SIT PRETTY. In the Level 2 agility class I’m taking, it’s one of the positions we use to warm up the dog. Sitting Pretty and Bowing are great ways to get your dog stretching. Anyway, it’s been a lot of fun working on this trick with Tys and D. I’ve been able to compare which one can balance better and which one can learn the voice command faster. They’ve both known how to do the basics of the trick for a while but it was time to take it to the next level. My goals: To be able to walk a full circle around them while they stay in the position and to be able to take a photograph of them in Sit Pretty. Trying to take a photograph of your dog in a certain position really tests their ability to STAY. You need to be at a distance, have the trick on voice command and proof it enough to to be able to fuss with the camera to get the right shot. Tyson was up for the challenge. Delilah is almost there and has way better balance than Tyson. I have a lot of people in my classes that say’ oh ya my dog knows that trick.’ And then they show me some crappy variation where they have to chant at the dog 10 times before the dog performs for a millisecond. I’m not gonna lie, that bugs me. I hate when people set low expectations for dogs. I want to be impressed by a trick.
